Before you park it
- Wash the bike, dry it fully, wax the paint
- Change the oil and filter — used oil holds acids and water
- Clean and lube the chain
- Check coolant and antifreeze strength
- Fill the tank and add fuel stabilizer (ethanol pulls in water)
- Carbureted bike: drain the float bowls
- Check brake fluid — level and age
Battery
- Disconnect it, or hook up a trickle charger / battery tender
- Not a plain full-rate charger left on — that does more harm than good
- Clean and grease the terminals
Storage spot
- Dry and above freezing if you can, not straight onto cold concrete
- Put it on stands, or raise tire pressure to the maximum on the sidewall
- Breathable cover, never airtight plastic (it sweats)
- Plug the exhaust — moisture and rodents
Paperwork
- Some insurers offer a lay-up or storage policy — worth a call
- Note when registration renewal falls due
- Note the next service by date, not just by mileage
Come spring, before the first ride
- Check tire pressure and tread depth
- Check brakes and chain tension
- Refit the battery, test lights and indicators
- Check oil level and look for leaks
- Keep the first ride short and gentle, then look it over again
